The Dubai International Boat Show provided a unique insight into an expanding market place. With a billion people in the Middle East and several thousand enjoying huge wealth, there is no reason to suggest that this market will not mature in the next decade. This, coupled with the fact that their near neighbours in India are too far from the typical millionaire hang-outs and the direct flights offered from Moscow, means it will become a brand new playground of the seriously 'nouveau riche' and not just their Arab cousins, brothers, fathers, sons and uncles. Dubai will no doubt grow from being one vast building site into a coastline of shining new floating real estate and one day a fleet of new builds too.
On Thursday 1st March superyachtart.com, The Yacht Report's creative agency, hosted a launch party for the latest addition to its book portfolio, IDEAS: interior design, exterior architecture & styling which is an anthology of some of the leading Superyacht designers in the world. The exclusive evening was held at the elegant and rather apt Design Club in the Design Centre Chelsea Harbour, who co-hosted the gathering.
Top Superyacht designers travelled from as far as Holland, Germany and Italy just to catch a first glimpse of the conceptually unique book, and a delicious assortment of food from across the globe was served with champagne and mojitos freshly prepared by the mixologist.
It was a rare opportunity for the contemporaries to rub shoulders without the usual pressure of clients and press, and many old friends were reunited for the evening - some having collaborated on yacht projects over 30 years ago!
Having their work presented in the book, its potentially fiercest critics are the designers; however, there has been unanimous praise and support for its concept which gives the reader an opportunity to not only view a capsule collection of each designer's celebrated work, but also an insight into their creative thought process and views on the industry through the written interviews.
"The book is absolutely stunning," says Andrew Winch Designs; "A genuinely refreshing concept," quoted Tim Heywood.
The IDEAS book is available for purchase at www.superyachtart.com/ideas at the superb price of £75 (+P&P), or for multiple purchases please contact esther@superyachtart.com

A relative newcomer to the yachting world, Amory Ross began taking pictures of boats immediately following his college graduation in 2006. While his beginnings focused on international grand-prix racing, Amory has worked hard to broaden his portfolio to cover all aspects of life on, around, or in the ocean. A group of world-famous yachting names, national and industry press congregated to celebrate the launch of two books with a common theme, the life and vision of Tom Perkins, owner of The Maltese Falcon. Those involved in the realisation of this revolutionary luxury sailing yacht were able to come together once again to relive the years of dedication that were put into the landmark build, including the Perini Navi team who flew over from Viareggio, Damon Roberts, Ken Freivokh, Liz Windsor, and Jeroen de Vos, as well as the man himself, Tom.
Champagne, canapés and conversation set an elegant and relaxed tone for the evening, which was hosted at the Design Club in the Design Centre Chelsea Harbour, London. Tom made a speech to once again thank everyone for their hard work and commitment, with so many key individuals involved it was hard to name them all! After the speeches there was much exchanging of The Maltese Falcon: Art of Innovation books for autographs and personal messages. Tom's new autobiography of his fascinating and adventurous life, Valley Boy, also provided great insight into how this great player of Silicon Valley made his name through venture capitalism and outstanding business acumen.
